How to Become

When you think of your future you, who are you?  What are you doing?  What does it feel like being this best you?  What are your priorities?

We talked about this a bit in my last post.  Who do you intent to be?  What are your intentions?

Now, looking specifically at your habits and routines.

Do they support your intentions?

Are they the best way to achieve those intentions?

Let's break this down using an example.

My future self is well rested.  My current habit is to fall into bed in the wee hours after binge watching another series.  Not only that, but my smart watch wakes me up because of 100 notifications received during the night.  I wake up with my makeup smeared across my pillow because whose got time for washing faces when there is Netflix.  And now I'm flat out running at the start of my day.

Obvi, these habits and routines do not support my future intentions to be well rested.  So let's set an ideal bed time of 10 p.m.  I've been going to bed usually around 3 a.m. so I'm going to start by washing my face at 9 p.m. to signal to myself it's time to shut down.  Let's make that a habit before doing anything more, because baby steps.  Baby steps will definitely get you there.  Start small when you need to!

Next, let's set a rule that I do not consume any digital media after 9 p.m.  This will help with my blue light absorption and begin to assist the body with resetting it's clock.  I'll do a puzzle, read a book, call a friend, go for a walk.  No t.v., no computer, no phone gazing.

I will most likely find that I am already going to bed earlier than 3 a.m., but if not I will start by going to bed 15 minutes earlier each night until I'm there.

And remember, my mornings were really crazy too, so I might consider meal prepping, laying out clothes for the next day, reviewing my planner at night so I'm mentally prepared for the next day.

Baby steps and I've massively impacted my health, my energy levels, and my ability to achieve each day.

So ask yourself:

Are my habits and routines the best way to achieve intentions?
