Manufactured Motivation

Sometimes we need to manufacture some motivation.  I wrote a bit about this with the review of The 12 Week Year.  I wasn't a huge fan of the book, but I think it might be the best example of manufactured motivation.

Basically, we want to use something external to us to achieve a goal.

  • Before the kids go back to school, I want to...
  • By Halloween...
  • By Thanksgiving...
I would add in by the end of the year, but I think that might be a bit too long.  October is the start of a quarter so maybe,

  • Before the next quarter begins...
  • In the next quarter...
Speaking of which, the next quarter is the last quarter of the year.  Is there something that you want to achieve before the end of the year that you can get a jump start on and then kick ass with it next quarter?

Jump starts are an excellent way to get started and then put it into overdrive.  Maybe you had a goal to lose 10 lbs this year and instead you found you gained 5 lbs.  Let's set it at a goal to lose 5 lbs before October first and then 10 lbs in the final quarter.

This is some powerful sheet to get you where you need to go.  Find arbitrary points of measure, that don't really mean anything, but can motivate you.

Walk every day for 3 weeks.  Why?  I like the number 3.
